How to Measure Yourself for Activewear (Plus-Size Guide)

Accurate measurements are the foundation of great fit. Here's exactly how to measure yourself for plus-size activewear — step by step.

What You Need

A soft measuring tape (not a rigid ruler), a mirror, and ideally a friend to help. Measure over bare skin or thin underwear — never over bulky clothing.

Waist Measurement

Find your natural waist — the narrowest point of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button. Stand relaxed (don't suck in). Wrap the tape around your waist horizontally and note the measurement in inches and centimeters.

Hip Measurement

Stand with your feet together. Find the fullest point of your hips and seat — usually 7–9 inches below your natural waist. Wrap the tape around the fullest point horizontally. This is your hip measurement.

Inseam Measurement

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Measure from your crotch to the floor along the inside of your leg. This determines legging length — full length, 7/8, or capri.

Bust Measurement (for Sports Bras)

Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. This is your bust measurement. For sports bra sizing, you'll also need your band measurement — measure directly under your bust.

Using Your Measurements

Compare your measurements to the size chart on each product page. When you're between sizes, size up for leggings (the fabric will stretch to fit) and size up for sports bras if you need more coverage or support.

FAQ

Should I measure myself before every purchase? Your measurements can change, so it's worth re-measuring every few months or after significant body changes.

What if my measurements fall between two sizes? Size up for leggings. For sports bras, consider your activity level — size up for high-impact, size down for low-impact if you prefer a snugger fit.
