How to Measure Yourself for Leggings (Plus Size Guide to Getting It Right)
The number one reason leggings don't fit is incorrect sizing — and the number one reason for incorrect sizing is not knowing your measurements. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure yourself for leggings, with specific tips for plus size bodies.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape (not a metal one)
- A mirror or a friend to help
- Form-fitting clothing or bare skin for accurate measurements
- A pen and paper to record your measurements
The 4 Key Measurements for Leggings
1. Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your torso — usually about 1 inch above your belly button. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and snug but not tight. Don't suck in your stomach — measure your natural, relaxed waist.
Plus size tip: Many women measure their waist at the belly button rather than the natural waist. The natural waist is always narrower and is where high-rise legging waistbands sit.
2. Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat — usually about 7–9 inches below your natural waist. Stand with your feet together and keep the tape parallel to the floor.
Plus size tip: This is your most important measurement for legging fit. If you're between sizes, the hip measurement should be your deciding factor.
3. Inseam
Measure from your crotch to the floor (or to where you want the legging to end). The easiest way is to measure a pair of leggings that fit you well from the crotch seam to the hem.
Plus size tip: Taller plus size women often need a longer inseam than standard sizing provides. Check the brand's inseam length before purchasing.
4. Thigh
Measure around the fullest part of your thigh — usually about 1 inch below the crotch. This measurement is especially important for women with thick thighs.
Plus size tip: If your thigh measurement is significantly larger than what the size chart suggests for your waist size, look for brands that offer curvy-cut leggings with extra room through the thigh.
How to Use Your Measurements
Once you have your measurements, compare them to the brand's size chart. Always use the brand's specific chart — sizing varies significantly between brands. When your measurements fall between sizes:
- Size up if your hips or thighs are the larger measurement
- Size up if you prefer a more comfortable, relaxed fit
- Size down only if your waist is the larger measurement and the brand has a stretchy waistband
