Working out in the cold is a completely different challenge from working out in a climate-controlled gym. Your leggings need to do more: retain warmth, manage sweat (because yes, you still sweat in the cold), resist wind, and maintain their structure and opacity even when the temperature drops. Here’s what to actually look for.
The Cold Weather Legging Challenge
Cold weather creates a specific problem for activewear: your body generates heat during exercise, but the environment is pulling that heat away. The result is a constant thermal battle — you’re sweating under your leggings while the outside of the fabric is cold. A legging that handles this well keeps you warm without trapping sweat against your skin, which would make you feel cold and clammy as soon as you slow down.
This is why “just wear thicker leggings” isn’t the right answer. Thickness alone doesn’t solve the problem — fabric construction and layering strategy do.
Fabric Options for Cold Weather
Midweight Nylon-Spandex (The Versatile Base)
A midweight nylon-spandex legging — the same fabric used in standard activewear — works well for cold weather down to about 45°F (7°C) when layered correctly. Nylon has natural wind resistance and moisture-wicking properties, and a midweight fabric provides enough insulation for mild cold without trapping heat during intense exercise.

Fleece-Lined Leggings (For Serious Cold)
Fleece-lined leggings have a brushed inner surface that traps warm air against the skin. They’re significantly warmer than standard leggings and are appropriate for temperatures below 40°F (4°C) or for low-intensity outdoor activities like walking where you’re not generating as much body heat.
The trade-off: fleece-lined leggings are less breathable and less moisture-wicking than standard leggings. For high-intensity outdoor workouts, they can cause overheating and sweat buildup. They’re best for walking, light jogging, and outdoor yoga rather than running or HIIT.
Thermal Compression Leggings
Thermal compression leggings combine compression fabric with a thermal layer — typically a polyester-spandex blend with a brushed or fleece inner surface. They provide the muscle support of compression with added warmth. These are the choice for serious cold-weather runners and cyclists who need both performance and insulation.
What to Look For Specifically
Wind Resistance
Wind chill is the biggest factor in cold-weather discomfort. Tightly woven nylon-spandex fabrics have natural wind resistance — the tight weave blocks wind better than loosely knit fabrics. Some cold-weather leggings also have a wind-resistant panel at the front of the thigh, which is where wind hits most directly during running.
Moisture Management
In cold weather, sweat management is even more important than in warm weather. Wet fabric against cold skin causes rapid heat loss — which is why cotton is completely unsuitable for cold-weather workouts. How to Layer for Cold Weather Workouts
Down to 50°F (10°C): A standard midweight legging is sufficient on its own. Add a long-sleeve base layer on top.
40–50°F (4–10°C): Layer a midweight legging under running tights or wind-resistant pants for outdoor runs. For lower-intensity activity, a fleece-lined legging on its own works well.
Below 40°F (4°C): Fleece-lined or thermal compression leggings as a base, with wind-resistant outer pants for running. For walking, fleece-lined leggings alone are usually sufficient.
The layering rule: You should feel slightly cool when you start your outdoor workout. If you feel warm before you begin moving, you’re overdressed and will overheat within minutes. Dress for 10–15 degrees warmer than the actual temperature to account for body heat generated during exercise.
The Plus Size Consideration
Plus size bodies generate more heat during exercise, which means you may need less insulation than standard cold-weather guides suggest. A legging that’s appropriate for a straight-size body at 40°F may be too warm for a plus size body doing the same workout at the same temperature. Start with less insulation than you think you need and adjust based on experience.
