Starting yoga is one of the best decisions you can make for your body and your mind. The clothes you wear to your first class matter — not because yoga is a fashion show, but because the right clothes let you focus entirely on the practice instead of adjusting, pulling, or worrying about coverage. This guide is for plus size women who are new to yoga and want to know exactly what to wear.

The Short Answer

You need two things: a legging that stays put and a bra that supports. Everything else is optional. The rest of this guide explains how to choose the right ones.

The Legging

The most important property in a yoga legging is four-way stretch — the ability to stretch in all four directions simultaneously. Yoga moves the body in every plane: forward folds, lateral stretches, twists, inversions. A legging with only two-way stretch will resist certain movements, pulling you out of the pose and into your clothes.

The second most important property is a waistband that stays put. Look for a wide, double-layered waistband that sits at the natural waist. For beginners, a full-length legging provides the most coverage and confidence through every pose. As your practice develops, a capri legging or flare legging may suit certain styles better. The Bra

Yoga is low-to-medium impact — you don’t need the compression of a running bra. For A–C cups, a racerback sports bra with a double-layered front provides coverage through every inversion without restricting deep breathing. For D+ cups, a bra top with wider straps and a structured band provides the additional support you need. Avoid underwire — it digs, shifts, and restricts breathing.

What to Wear on Top

Many practitioners wear just a bra top and legging, especially in heated classes. If you prefer more coverage, a fitted crop tee from our Crop Tees collection works well. Avoid loose, flowing tops — they fall forward during inversions and obscure your alignment.

What Not to Wear

Avoid cotton leggings — they lose shape and become uncomfortable when damp. Avoid single-layer waistbands — they roll during forward folds. Avoid underwire bras. Avoid anything that requires constant adjustment.
