The Real Difference Between 3X and 6X Sizing in Activewear — and Why Most Brands Stop Too Soon

The Real Difference Between 3X and 6X Sizing in Activewear — and Why Most Brands Stop Too Soon

“We carry plus sizes!” a brand announces proudly — and then you click through to find the range stops at 2X or 3X. Sound familiar? For women who wear a 4X, 5X, or 6X, this is a daily frustration. But beyond the obvious problem of availability, there’s a deeper issue that even brands who do extend their sizing often get wrong: the difference between a 3X and a 6X isn’t just a number. It’s a completely different fit equation.

What “Grading” Actually Means

When a brand creates a size run, they start with a base size (usually a straight-size sample) and “grade” it up and down — meaning they add or subtract measurements at specific points to create each size. The problem is that most brands grade proportionally from a straight-size base, which means the proportional relationships between measurements are designed for a straight-size body.

By the time you get to a 3X, 4X, or 6X, those proportional assumptions break down. A body that wears a 6X doesn’t just have a larger waist — the relationship between waist, hip, thigh, and inseam is fundamentally different from a size 8 body scaled up mathematically.

What Changes (or Should Change) Between 3X and 6X

Hip-to-Waist Ratio

At larger sizes, the difference between waist and hip measurements often increases rather than staying proportional. A legging graded correctly for a 6X will have a wider hip panel relative to the waist than one simply scaled up from a 3X pattern.

Thigh Width and Inseam Gusset

Inner thigh width increases significantly between a 3X and a 6X. Without a proper gusset (the diamond-shaped panel at the crotch), leggings at larger sizes will pull, twist, and create uncomfortable seam pressure exactly where you don’t want it. Rise Height

The front rise — the distance from the crotch seam to the waistband — needs to increase at larger sizes to provide adequate coverage and prevent the waistband from sitting below the belly rather than above it. Many brands forget this, which is why “high waist” leggings in a 6X can feel like mid-rise leggings in a 3X. Read our full guide on rise height for curvy bodies →

Waistband Width

A wider waistband is more important at larger sizes, not less. More surface area means better weight distribution and a more secure hold. Brands that use the same waistband width across their entire size run are cutting corners.

Why Most Brands Stop at 3X

The honest answer is cost and complexity. Extending a size run to 6X requires re-grading patterns, sourcing more fabric per unit, and often rethinking construction details like gussets and waistbands. It’s more expensive to do right, and most brands aren’t willing to invest in it.

The result is that women who wear 4X–6X are either excluded entirely or offered poorly fitting garments that were never truly designed for their bodies.

What We Do Differently at Azalea Couture

Our leggings are sized from L through 6XL — and that range is graded with plus size bodies in mind from the start, not as an afterthought. The rise height, hip panel, thigh width, and waistband proportions are all adjusted across the size run so that a 6XL fits like it was made for a 6XL body. Because it was.

If you’ve been burned by brands that stop at 3X or offer extended sizes that don’t actually fit, explore our full leggings collection and find your size in prints that were designed to be worn, not just offered.

You deserve activewear that was built for your body — not scaled up from someone else’s.
